Today’s Midjourney blog focuses on the --style parameter. We’ll use the backdrop of an Advanced Alien Civilization for the exploration. The style parameter helps you have more control over your prompt. Per Midjourney documentation, using the style parameter tells the AI to use “less automatic beautification.” This makes the images you get more raw, less touched up. Let’s explore concepts of an alien civilization with it.

What emerged is interesting. We have variation in the type of civilization or lack there of. Quadrant 1 looks as if the planet surface is almost completely ruined. Perhaps from the tidal forces of the nearby moons. 2 is very alien and distinct. The third is maybe the first quadrant just later in the demise of the planet and its moons. Quadrant 4 definitely has great elements of a civilization. Here humans have landed on a planet and begin to build. Despite the varied results we do see that the style element played its part. All images have a more photorealistic quality to them. They feel real.
Let’s take a look at variations on the prompt itself. With a slight change to the key terms we will get different aesthetics and image quality.

We’ve added underwater components to the prompt to drop the society below the waves. Midjourney does great job adding more organic, sea-based qualities to the images. One station looks like a whale coming into frame, others look like coral or conches. The lighting effects are amazing! It gives nice ethereal properties to the pictures.

Quadrant 1 looks like a scene from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. The idyllic scene in 2 is very much anime art of a futuristic environment. The final two give more alien vibes.
